The peak of nature photography is to be found far up in the northern hemisphere. It is between sixty and eighty degrees north at the polar circles. Every first few weeks of the year the so called northern lights or aurora borealis appear in the sky. They are any photographer’s absolute dream (perhaps only comparable to a volcanic eruption). Well, they only appear sometimes, they cannot be expected. It takes hours or even days and nights of waiting asking for a maximum of patience and resilience against disappointment. Preying on the northern lights during those crystal clear and icy nights often turns into a meditative sensation. Eventually, emotions are overwhelming, orgasmic, and almost indescribable when the lights drawn by solar wind come into sight. One must be careful not to forget the actual reason for his presence: Taking photographs. It would be a pity! These situations transform a talented photographer into a multimedia-artist working only with nature’s gifts and experimenting with shutter speed and light sources.
